SMB network share

Read, write, move and delete files on Windows, NAS and Samba network shares over SMB2/SMB3.

How it works in practice

Files exchanged with old systems through a shared folder

How we apply it

In our on-premise engagement for an accounting and advisory firm, new bank statements are picked up each day from the office network storage and processed, with the data staying on site.

This node connects n8n to classic network file shares on Windows servers, NAS devices and Samba, using a pure-JavaScript SMB2/SMB3 client bundled in the package and NTLM authentication (v1, v2 or auto-detected). File operations upload, download, delete, move and rename; folder operations create, list, move and delete. No OS-level mount is needed, so it works inside a container.

File shares are still how a lot of Bulgarian SMEs and accounting offices exchange data: a legacy accounting or ERP system drops an export into a folder, and an accountant picks up the report from another. Stock n8n has no SMB node. Because the client is vendored and has no native dependencies it keeps working on recent Node versions, and SMB and NTSTATUS errors (logon failure, sharing violation, path not found) are translated into readable messages.

In practice it picks up export files left by on-premises systems, publishes generated statements and reports to the share accountants use, archives processed files into dated folders and lists a folder on a schedule to trigger processing of new files. It runs in 20 production workflows.

Limits: there is no file-exists or stat operation and no recursive create-directory, so parent folders must exist. Delete File is permanent, and Delete Folder removes the folder with all its contents.

For your technical team: it installs from npm as

n8n-nodes-kt-smb

What it means for you

  • Older systems keep working as they are

  • Nobody carries files between folders by hand

  • It fits the shared folders the office already uses
